NEUBRANDENBURG. A German proverb says: “Success just needs to be picked up from the street”; however, for the engineers and geologists of Geothermie Neubrandenburg GmbH it is not on the streets but underneath. The planning office has specialized in the development and exploitation of geothermal energy and thermal water for heating, electricity generation and balneological applications.

In the past two decades, the 20 staff members have planned, designed, constructed, and supported the operation of numerous geothermal system. Projects such as the oldest geothermal district heat system in Waren , the first geothermal electricity generation plant in Neustadt-Glewe, the exploration and design of the deepest heat store in Germany under the city of Neubrandenburg and the at present most modern and efficient geothermal plant near Munich  carry the signature of the Neubrandenburg engineers.

All these projects made superlatives for themselves. But still, the GTN list of references is much longer. E.g., GTN is participating in the geothermal development of the Imperial Baths on the island of Usedom and the drilling of the necessary deep wells.  GTN is rightly regarded as the market leader amongst the geothermal planning offices in Germany. The heat storage under the Reichstag building in Berlin, the co-designing of the energy system for the future Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, but also in Hungary, Croatia, and France belong to the flagship projects of the company.

For several years, GTN has been working very successfully abroad which became possible through a company partnership with the renowned Icelandic Mannvit enterprise which holds also 30 % of the GTN shares. Two years ago, GTN founded a daughter company in Chile – a genuine Icelandic-Chilean-German joint venture. Namely in Chile, the market is highly competitive; a very rapidly growing geothermal market in Latin America has to be dealt with. GTN takes new paths in expert personnel development in Chile. The two shareholders Peter Seibt and Frank Kabus give lectures at the University in Santiago de Chile. GTN even supervises undergraduates there; it is planned to employ young graduates.

“Surely, 20 years ago no one ever thought of this success story”, Seibt says, “we have been optimistic, naïve in a certain way, but luck has been playing its part as well in those years.”  So, it played an important role definitely that GTN was charged with the complete design of the energy supply system of the buildings of the German Parliament including innovative geothermal solutions.

Since May 2007, GTN has been running  an office also in Bavaria and could contribute its know-how in numerous geothermal projects, such as Unterhaching, Kirchstockach, Sauerlach, and Dürrnhaar. This was a reason for GTN to expand its capacities in South Germany. On 2 August 2011, GTN and Geothermie Unterhaching established a shared-office community. Both companies which have been cooperating for many years already benefit from the spatial merger.  The two Managing Directors Peter Seibt and Frank Kabus still see many more options for the future development of geothermal energy use, with Unterhaching playing a special role as a potential south German Center of Geothermal Competence, and Berlin as the location of a new office in the Federal capital.
